Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sport Psychology?

Sport psychology is a field that focuses on the psychological factors that influence performance, motivation, and well-being in athletes. Sport psychologists work with athletes to help them develop the mental skills needed to perform at their best and overcome challenges.

How can a Sport Psychologist help me?

A sport psychologist can help you in many ways, including:

  • Developing mental skills such as goal setting, visualization, and self-talk

  • Improving motivation and confidence

  • Managing stress and anxiety

  • Dealing with performance pressure

  • Recovering from injuries

  • Coping with transitions such as retirement or a change in sport

  • Enhancing overall well-being.

What can I expect in a session?

In a session, you can expect to have a conversation about your goals and challenges. You may be asked questions to help you identify your strengths and what has worked well for you in the past. Together, we will develop a plan to help you reach your goals and overcome challenges.

Is this confidential?

Yes, working with a sport psychologist is confidential. Just like any other mental health professional, a sport psychologist is bound by professional ethics and laws to maintain confidentiality. However, there are exceptions to confidentiality, such as if the athlete is a danger to themselves or others.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions you need with a sport psychologist will depend on your goals and the challenges you are facing. Some athletes may only need a few sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing support. It's important to discuss your goals and expectations with your sport psychologist to develop a plan that works for you.

Can parents or coaches attend the sessions?

It is up to the athlete to decide whether parents or coaches can attend sessions. In some cases, it may be helpful for parents or coaches to attend sessions to better understand the athlete's goals and challenges. However, it is important to maintain the athlete's autonomy, confidentiality, and privacy.

Where do sessions take place?

One-to-one sessions primarily will take place virtually via video conferencing (e.g. google meet, zoom). Many clients prefer meeting virtually for numerous reasons: 1) It's more confidential not having to leave your own home; 2) It's cheaper as there are no travel costs for you or your psychologist; 3) It's easier and more convenient to fit a virtual session into a busy schedule.  However, if you wish to meet face-to-face, we can arrange a location.

How long are sessions?

Sessions typically last 55 minutes.

Do you offer work experience or shadowing?

Unfortunately, due to my with clients being confidential and protected by a code of ethics, I can not offer any meaningful work experience. However, if you would like any career advice about sport psychology, please get in contact and Iā€™m happy to provide a free 30 minute chat.
